Contrary to what some members might think, GCMAC's exciting monthly programs don't just "happen". Each presentation takes careful pre-planning, research and equipment setup. The video and sound system has to be connected each month. Our newsletter does not write, layout and print itself. The website has to be updated. Contracts with the museum are negotiated. Food is purchased and brought to meetings. SIG venues are sought out, and SIG presentations planned and presented. Vendors are solicited for giveaways. Items are purchased for drawings. The listserv is hosted and managed. The list goes on ....
All these things and more are virtually all accomplished by board members. Unpaid volunteers with busy lives and work schedules. Some members, like Marian Wertalka, a previous Volunteer of the Month, take it upon themselves to create programs like her fabulous Recycling program. Rose Lynn, though now living in South Carolina, remains our Ambassador. YOU TOO can be a volunteer. Come along to one of our board meetings, enjoy food and banter, get some tech questions answered by our self-proclaimed "experts", offer your ideas, and learn how you can contribute. Tell us what we could do better (and help us do it!). Write articles for the newsletter. Review a book. Help setup and teardown. Offer ways to spread the word to grow our membership.
Nominate someone you feel has been especially helpful to Gold Coast Mac! Contact any board member.

Have Mac Questions? We've Got The Answers!
Welcome to Gold Coast Mac, South Florida's oldest and most active Macintosh User Group. Whether you are a new Mac user or a veteran, we're sure to be of use to you.
We invite you to our monthly meetings (no charge for entry), where we share tips on being more productive, teach beginners and switchers the Mac basics, demonstrate cool new products, get our problems solved, ask for advice and network with other Mac users.
No question is too basic! Our Special Interest Groups, (SIGs) deal with specific products and subjects. Our active Listserv means instant access to experts when you need help is just an email away. And GCMAC membership is just $40 a year. Where else can you find all this - at any price?

| July Meeting: We're continuing to sell iPad raffle tickets! Get your chance at taking
home a cool new iPad. You must be a current member to buy a ticket so make
sure your membership is current. Ipad
We have quite a line-up for this month's meeting. We'll look at alternate
browsers, controlling your computer from another location, the redesigned
Mobile Me and a new spin on Apptalk with iPad Apptalk.
Our Questions and Answers session starts at 6 PM. If you arrive early
you'll get a chance at a guru all to yourself.
At 6:30 PM Esver Camacho will lead the Beginner's class. Bring your
questions and we'll guide you to a better understanding of your Mac.
At 7 PM Doug Noble will introduce us to alternate browsers. If Safari has
problems with some websites then we can always have another browser ready to
go. He'll show FireFox, Google's Chrome and Opera as viable alternatives.
Firefox, Chrome and Opera
Next, Esver Camacho will show the redesigned Mobile Me. Apple's service got
a facelift and we're going to explore what's new and what's not working.
Mobile Me
Bill Villberg will show us how to remotely control our home or office
computer no matter where you are. Using LogMeIn you can connect to your
computer from another computer and work as if you were right there. The
service is free but if you pay more you get additional features.
http://www.logmein.com/
Finally, Marylin Rey will take AppTalk in a slightly different direction.
She'll be showing some very cool applications just for the iPad! If you win
the iPad in our raffle you too can use them so pay attention.
Apps for Ipad
We'd love to see what you do on your Mac so please let me know if you'd
like to do a demo and we'll help you set it up. Come ready to learn and have fun. Don't forget to bring a friend and share
the joy. |
| April Meeting: Are you a fan of our iPhone/iTouch App Talk sessions (aka the Jim and Ron Show)? Check out their new App Talk Blog http://gcmcapptalk.blogspot.com and leave a comment, it will be appreciated. Look forward to another exciting round of App Talk this month. Our April meeting will also include a roundup of Offsite Backup Solutions by Doug Noble, including Carbonite, Mozy and others.
|
| March Meeting: We were delighted to have one of our relatively new members, Amy Sear, give an extremely informed discussion on using Garageband to edit audio. And Esver demonstrated Intuit's Quickbooks 2010, the premier solution for small business accounting. We were unfortunately pre-empted from using the auditorium by the Women's Film Festival, but enjoyed the laid back comfort of the Planetarium instead.
|
| February Meeting: We have a fantastic program in store for you this Wednesday.
Our Questions and Answers session starts at 6 PM. If you arrive early
you'll get a chance at a guru all to yourself.
At 6:30 PM Esver Camacho will lead the Beginner's class. This month we'll
look at iCal, Apple's calendar program. You'll learn how to set up reminders
and to do's, set up more than one calendar for the different hats you wear,
subscribe to other people's calendars or publish your own.
At 7 PM our main event begins.
AndrÉ Perwin will start off by cluing you in to our Twitter, Facebook and
Ning accounts. If you want to know about upcoming meetings and other GCMac
related events you can subscribe (free) to follow us.
James Lee of Tropical Software is going to show us the newest version of
his note-taking (life organizing) program: TopXNotes. It's is a
full-featured personal information manager for Mac OS X. It provides
complete control over the look of your notes, including font, size, style,
alignment, color, and text background color. TopXNotes can help you organize
all the bits of information you collect in your life into meaningful Groups
(like folders) and Categories (similar to tags) to make them easy to find
when you need them. Their exclusive QuickNote(tm) feature makes your most
frequently used notes available no matter what application you are using.
www.tropic4.com
Doug Noble will be showing us how he uses CopyPaste Pro. It's like Time
Machine for your clipboard. Anything you copy is saved and available in a
clip browser. You can even edit the clips. A new feature shortens URLs (web
addresses) in the clipboard instantly.

The Ron Bernstein and Jim Allen show continues this month showing their
favorite iPhone and iPod Touch apps.

January Meeting: Happy New Year! Our next fun filled meeting is Wednesday January 27th, 2010 at the Museum of Science. See you there!
|
| Holiday Meeting: Our annual combined November and December meeting was held Wednesday December 2nd. Eddie Torres presented "Round Trip: iPhoto to Photoshop Elements and Back to iPhoto", a great presentation on how to combine the best of both programs. Eddie says "It will change your life!" (previously presented at a recent Photoshop SIG). André Perwin showcased his Holiday Hot Disk featuring his favorite shareware picks. And finally, Ron Bernstein and James Allen once again awed us with iPhone Apptalk, a look at some neat iPhone apps. There were great door prizes, and a feast of homebaked snacks brought to share with fellow members.
Note: We had planned to have James Lee of Tropical Software, developer of TopXNotes, show us the latest improvements to this handy program, but he had to postpone due to a death in the family. He will be here at our February 2010 meeting.
|
| October Meeting: Listen up ghouls and goblins. We're going to have some fiendish fun at this month's Gold Coast Mac meeting. Our meeting being so close to Halloween we
thought we'd dress up for the occasion. Wear your favorite costume and be a
part of the fun. We'll have snacks and coffee as treats.
Please note that this month the Museum is having a Halloween show in the
auditorium where we normally meet. Instead they've moved us into another
room. Just go towards the auditorium and follow the signs to the meeting
place.
On to the program.
Apple is at it again introducing new hardware for us to salivate over. Join
the discussion of the new iMac and its spacious 27" screen, the seven-hour
battery life MacBook, the clever and gorgeous Magic Mouse, a faster Mac Mini
(including a server version) and the upgraded Airport Extreme.

http://www.apple.com/macbook

http://www.apple.com/macmini
http://www.apple.com/airportextreme
Our newest demo duo, Ron Bernstein and Jim Allen, will continue to show
their favorite iPhone and iPod Touch apps in a segement they like to call "App Talk".
http://www.apple.com/iphone/apps-for-iphone/
We'll also be continuing our members' favorite applications section. This
month we'll have, among others, Reunion 9 for Macintosh. If you've ever
wanted to map out your family tree and document where all those yahoos in
your family lineage came from this is the program for you.
http://www.leisterpro.com/
We have other prizes and surprises so don't miss out.
Our Questions and Answers session starts at 6 PM. If you arrive early you'll
get a chance at a guru all to yourself.
At 6:30 PM Esver Camacho will lead the Beginner's class. This month we'll go
on a tour of the System Preferences - what is there and making changes can
help you.
At 7 PM our main event begins. If you don't bring someone new to the meeting
two things will happen: you will miss out on helping Gold Coast Mac grow and
you will probably freeze to death since the museum get's very cold. So,
bring a sweater and a friend. The more the merrier.
Also, make a note that next month we'll combine the November and December
meetings and hold just one meeting on the FIRST Wednesday of December. That
is, December 2.
|
| September Meeting: Apple has finally introduced it's latest version of Mac OS X (Snow Leopard) and we're going to show you what's new and whether you should upgrade right away
or wait a bit. http://www.apple.com/macosx/
They've also revamped their music and video cataloging application, iTunes.
Let AndrÉ Perwin show you the new wish list and home sharing features.
They've also improved the iPod syncing portion. In addition, we'll be
discussing the new iPods introduced this month. http://www.apple.com/itunes/
We're introducing a new feature called the iPhone App of the Month. Ron
Bernstein will kick it off with his personal favorite. We encourage you to
share whatever application you find useful whether it's on your Mac or your
iPhone. http://www.apple.com/iphone/apps-for-iphone/ Come join us, meet old friends, bring a friend, and make new ones too!
|
| August Meeting:
There's a slight change in venue this month. The Miami Museum of Science is
trying to convince the powers that be to maintain their funding and they're
doing that in our spot in the auditorium. So, for Wednesday we'll be meeting
in the Gallery Room. Just walk into the lobby like you normally do, turn
right into the exhibit area (quickly check out the CSI - Crime Scene Insects
exhibit on the way to our meeting room) and the room will be on the right hand side. Don't worry, we'll have signs and people posted to help you get there.
Once there you'll be treated to a great program. Eddie Torres will offer a
double play. First, he's going to show how he uses iPhoto and Facefook to
share his pictures with the world. Even if you have an older version of
iPhoto he'll show you a neat add-on to let you upload your photos to your
Facebook account right from iPhoto. While on the subject of photos, he'll
demo a piece of software that saved all his photos when he thought he had
lost them. Ecamm's CardRaider is an inexpensive program but worth its weight in gold because it can rescue photos you may have deleted. It can even try to recover photos from damaged or reformatted memory cards.
What if you just like showing photos the old fashioned way? Well, Esver
Camacho will show how to create a book and a calendar using your photos
stored in iPhoto. Share your precious memories with a snazzy keepsake or put your mug for all to see month after month. Who says firemen, models and puppies are the only ones who get a calendar spread?
If you're into buying music from the iTunes music store and can't afford to
buy your whole collection in one shot we'll show you how to create a wish
list where you can buy a song or album with each present from grandma.
Finally, if you need to access your calendar from many places we'll show
you how to synchronize your iCal calendar with your Google calendar.
As always, we welcome members to share what they know about their favorite
programs and what they do on the Mac. You can take as little as five minutes
or 30 minutes. Just e-mail Esver@mac.com to help you get set up.
Last month we somehow managed to forget to give away our second copy of the
great film "Welcome to Macintosh - The documentary for the rest of us." We
won't make that mistake twice. We have other prizes and surprises so don't
miss out.
Our Questions and Answers session starts at 6 PM. If you arrive early
you'll get a chance at a guru all to yourself.
At 6:30 PM Esver Camacho will lead the Beginner's class. If you have
something you want to learn this is your chance to have your own
semi-private tutor. If there are no requests we'll show you how to organize
your bookmarks (favorites) in either Safari or FireFox.
At 7 PM our main event begins. If you don't bring someone new to the
meeting two things will happen: you will miss out on helping Gold Coast Mac
grow and you will probably freeze to death since the museum get's very cold.
So, bring a sweater and a friend. The more the merrier.
|
| July Meeting We're inviting members to show their favorite applications or useful
utilities. This month the Board members will get it started with some of
their favorites. Once you see how easy it is to show your favorite program
(you only need to be up there for five minutes) you'll want to share your
found treasures too. Just contact Esver and we'll guide you
and set up everything you need. Our second night at the movies happens Wednesday night. We're screening part two of the film entitled "Welcome to Macintosh - The documentary for
the rest of us." (See June meeting for full description).
|
| June Meeting: Get ready for a night at the movies. In honor of the Mac's 25th Anniversary this year (in January) we're going back in time and screening a great film
entitled "Welcome to Macintosh - The documentary for the rest of us."
According to the filmmakers:
"Welcome to Macintosh - The documentary for the rest of us." is the first
documentary of its kind to mix history, criticism and an unapologetic
revelry of all things Apple into a movie experience. The film explores the
early years of Apple, the many challenges Apple has faced, and what the
future may hold for the company and it's products. Ex-Apple employees,
engineers and community members offer insight on the company's innovations,
failures, cultural impact and what the future may be like beyond the reign
of its co-founder Steve Jobs. Interviews include notable Apple personalities
Andy Hertzfeld, co-creator of the original Macintosh, Guy Kawasaki, long
time Mac evangelist, Leander Kahney, author of the book "Cult of Mac", Jim
Reekes, creator of the Macintosh start-up sound and Ron Wayne, original
co-founder of the Apple Computer Company.
Two lucky people will each have a copy to take home! Plus, they've sent
some other great give-aways.
YouTube
Welcome to Macintosh
Did you catch all the news from Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference? A
new, faster iPhone, the latest version of the software for current iPhone
and iPod Touch owners, new laptops and Snow Leopard (the next version of Mac
OS X). Charlie Carlon will fill us in on all the great stuff Apple recently
announced.
If you want your presence to be known on the web and you want to do it with
style don't pass up Ron Bernstein's iWeb '09 demo. As part of Apple's iLife
suite that comes with every Mac you too can make web pages that look like a
professional was sitting by your side. Check out what's new in the latest
version.

| May Meeting Marian Wertalka will be showing budding novelists and screenwriters a great tool for getting those great ideas out of your head and into your computer.
Storyist gives you a word processor with a page layout view and support for
headers, footers, and style sheets so you can produce submission-ready
manuscripts and scripts. It lets you work with a storyboard with
customizable story sheets so you can track your plot, characters, and
settings. It even has a project manager with fast, project-wide search
capabilities so you can keep your writing organized and accessible. Whether
you're headed for Hollywood or just want to produce a killer homemade movie
you don't want to miss this program.
http://www.storyist.com/
AndrÉ Perwin will help demystify Apple's Keychain security software. If you
wanted to put your passwords and other information someplace safe you would
do well to pay attention. And, it's free!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keychain_(Mac_OS)
If you missed the nice integration the old iMovie had with iDVD then don't
fret. Apple's latest incarnation of iMovie '09 has brought it back so you
can set up Chapter Markers in iMovie and then move right on over to iDVD.
Esver Camacho will show how these two programs work together to help you
share the memories.

April Meeting: At our April 29th meeting, member Jon King showed "1Password" from Agile Web Solutions. Dave Game showed Little Snapper, software which makes it easy to capture an entire web page. Yusty Salzman showed a fun Crossword application, Crossword Forge. And Esver Camacho showed his favorite application launcher, QuickSilver. A fun tim was had by all!
In other news ... Recently, I received a Macbook hardshell case to review from UNIEA. Andre Perwin having the requisite MacBook, he accepted the challenge. Read his enthusiastic review here.
At the April Photoshop SIG hosted once again by Ron Bernstein, Eddie Torres presented an extremely in-depth and fascinating talk on "What Photographers need to know about LCD Monitors". The PDF Presentation is available here. And at the Hardware SIG hosted by Charlie Carlon, yours truly turned an MSI Wind Netbook into a full fledged "nano Mac" complete with Leopard 10.5, with Charlie's careful guidance. It's waaaay coool!
|
| March Meeting: Last month we started to show iLife '09. This month we continued with iMovie '09. Made more powerful with the kind of advanced features we've been
asking for while keeping it simple enough for novices to kick out great
videos. Join us in putting the newest iMovie through its paces.
http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie. We also enjoyed seeing an old friend again, James Lee of Tropical Software showed us the newest version of his note-taking (life organizing) program: TopXNotes.
|
February Meeting: The new iLife '09 is out and we've started showing you what's
included. Is it worth the upgrade? We'll let you decide. This month we start
with iPhoto '09. Esver Camacho showed all the cool new features. And if you've been looking for an inexpensive replacement for Microsoft Office
Dale LeCornu showed us his pick: Butler Office Pro - text, spreadsheets, create presentations, drawings, formulas and databases.
|
January Meeting: To kick off the new year, on January 28th, we had a great program for you, including a visit from Adobe thanks to the joining of forces
between the South Florida Final Cut Pro Users Group and ourselves for this special event.
Our Questions and Answers session started at 6 PM. As always, arriving early pays off, you get a chance at a guru all to yourself.
At 6:30 PM Esver Camacho lead the Beginner's class, followed by a demo of the highlights of Pages '09. Apple's word processor/page layout program
At 7 PM our main meeting started. We had a presentation on Adobe's
Creative Suite 4 Production Premium. Adobe showed you the tools you can use to really shine - After Effects, Preiere and how they work with Final Cut pro.
Another special guest, Nicole Martinez (Apple Certified Instructor, Editor,
Filmmaker, Composer), showed us how to create graphics and mattes in
Photoshop for use in Final Cut Pro.
Snacks and cofee were in adundance, as well as door prizes for all.

GCMAC makes member "114% more intelligent" !
From the GCMAC Listserv What a great meeting we had tonight. If you are a member and missed this
meeting you really need to make time in the months to come and get back to
the GCMac family. It always amazes me how much I learn at all the meetings,
not to mention that over the years I have made some great friends in GCMac.
The presentations tonight were exceptional. I can't wait to dig into iLife
'08 as well as iWork '08. I bought a copy prior to the meeting but someone
actually won a free copy of iLife tonight at the meeting. I came home and
immediately downloaded Paparazzi (a freeware screen capture program that lets you capture complete web page, no matter how long, to a JPG or PDF [Ed]) because of another great presentation.
Thanks to all of the presenters for making me '114%' more intelligent than I
was before the meeting. I look forward to seeing everyone next month... :) Bob Lasky, GCM Member In addition to presentations of iMovie '08, iPhoto '08, Numbers and Paparazzi, we also gave away a new inkjet printer generously donated by Marian Wertalka, and a copy of iLife '08. Two winners went home happy! Free snacks and coffee provided by GCMAC were also served. Empty ink cartridges and cell phones were collected for recycling. And new and renewing members went home with the fabulous new green GCMAC mug!

Get DSL Service On the Cheap!
For those of you still on dial-up, there was a recent news item that might be of interest: AT&T is offering a $10.00 per month DSL term plan to Bellsouth customers who have not previously subscribed to DSL.
The yearly term plan is the same as the basic plan with speeds up to 768 Kbps. This plan is the result of a concession AT&T made to the FTC, in order for AT&T to become the new owners of BellSouth, and Cingular.
The plan is obscured somewhat on the internet services page - you will have to scroll down towards the bottom of the page to see the link for "Term contract plans available."
